Deb - 10/3/2011
I had chemo today at Magee (wonderful) and Lori (who is awesome) told me about your website and how inspiring you and Mike are. I really was uplifted reading everything on your blog especially since I am having a rough time with the IP cisplatin. Thanks for the encouragement when I needed it! Love the motto, "Won't let this beat me!" :)

Your Chemo Nurse-Lori - 7/3/2011
Darcel, I can't believe that it's been 1 year already since you first walked into the treatment room at Magee Women's Cancer Center. You appeared calm but I could tell you were hiding your anxiety well. I knew that you were not going to be a CHEMO WHIMP and were going to take whatever was dealt to you and fight it w/ whatever you got.
I remember your amazement at having the port needles placed for the first time and saw how the chemo was administered. You thought it was the neatest thing ever.
I remember being impressed at for how such a young woman the courage, strength, and determination you have shown dealing w/ your diagnosis, chemo treatment, side effects, disappointing news of counts being low and treatment delays. But you really didn't LET IT BEAT YOU! (MELT DOWNS,WHAT MELT DOWNS)??
I remember all the support you had from your family to your great friends that took the time to ride you to your treatments and sit w/ you(unfortunately not everyone has that)
Mostly, I remember your great husband that has supported you through this year. Guys that have been married for 10, 20, 30+ yrs need to take lessons from Mike. He is one CLASS ACT!!!
God Bless you both!! Darcel, I wish you continued good health. You are an inspiration!!

Aunt Nini - 6/30/2011
Yes I do remember THAT day. Such a scary date that is embedded in people's minds that love you. I enjoyed reading your latest blog and I am so proud of how you tackled this horrible disease. You are the one that truly made it easier for those of us that love you to hang in there with you. Your sense of humor and tenacity to beat the big C made it possible. You will always be a Warrior Princess to me and we need to set a date to get "inked"! Love you bunches!

Aunt Nini - 6/9/2011

BTW: I found your website very interesting and educational.

Mandy Blackburn - 1/14/2011
I am just a little behind on this. I am one of the student you spoke to at Allegany College. I just wanted to thank you for your courage. I purchased one of your t-shirts and wear it all the time. You would not believe the amount of strangers that stop me and ask about it. I have had so many people tell me that they are going to check out your site. My mother is a breast cancer survivor. I just wanted to say keep up all of you great work. So glad that your chemo is complete. Praying for you every day.

Lyn - 1/13/2011
Just discovered your site today through the OVA1 page on Facebook. Read your blogs with great interest as our timelines for discovery and treatment were similar, though yours was a tougher road than mine - I only had to have 6 chemos, and only once every 3 weeks, and all only IV, none IP. Can't even imagine having to do as many as you did as often as you did! Just wanted to say that I'm amazed by your poise and grace and inspired by your attitude and courage. Hope all continues to go well for you. Peace*Love*Cure <3

Jenny Damin - 1/12/2011
Congratulations on your fabulous doctor’s report today! : )

Tanisha - 11/15/2010
I was in Pfr. Tunings class for your speech. It was a great speech :). When I was 15 I had a Tumor on my right ovary the size of a small soccer ball it was benign.. When you were saying how your CA-125 was 500, mine was 200. It was a crazy time and you were very insipirational. Even though I didnt have cancer it was still comforting, I always fear I will lose my last ovary. I just wanted to thank you for speaking in our class :)..

Shanna - 11/12/2010
Hi darc just wanted you to know that uncle clyde and i love you very much and you are always in our prayers..You will do great at the college when you give your speech....

Sorry to hear about the set back. It is out of your hands sweetie, but keep your chin up. You have blown through most of your treatments so you have done quite well. Think healthy thoughts and don't get near any germ bags... Try watching some funny movies. Laughter is the best medicine. Love you Warrior Princess.

Clara - 10/28/2010

Darcel,
I just listened to your broadcast today. Such an amazingly positive attitude... and it will carry you through this. I will be celebrating my 10th anniversary next month from my diagnosis with OVCA IIIc. I was also treated in Pittsburgh but well before the IP treatment was common place. Never let go of the hope. Please join us for our Walk to Beat the Silence of Ovarian Cancer each September in North Park, PA. My prayer are with you.

Barbara Knecht - 10/13/2010
I don't think we ever met, but your husband is my IT guy and my neice (Lauren) was your college roommate. Mike stopped by today to work on some networking, and we talked for quite awhile about your fight. Darcel, your story is amazing! How wonderful of you to share it here for others! Keep on fighting! You won't let this beat you!

Jo Ann Kimmick - 10/12/2010
Dear Miss Darcel, I am sitting in a hospital room in Sheboygan, Wisconsin with my beautiful sister Sandi. Sandi was just diagnosed with Stage IIIc Ovarian Cancer. A high school friend from Conemaugh sent your site to me and I feel like your wrote the script for what Sandi has been sharing with us. She is ready to fight and wants the port and chemotherapy started yesterday. I am going to share your site with her and maybe you two could chat. Cousin Melinda - 10/8/2010
Darcel, you were wonderful on the radio broadcast last night -- you are doing so much to help others. If we could only make CA-125 screening a part of every woman's annual exam!!! Your strength is an example to all in the face of adversity. In your words, "Keep Your Head High".
"Without the strength to endure the crisis, one will not see the opportunity within. It is within the process of endurance that opportunity reveals itself."
Chin-Ning Chu

Shannon - 10/7/2010

Erin - 9/19/2010
Hi Darcel, you don't know me, but someone posted your blog on the www.inspire.com website (which, btw, is a great website for those of us with ovarian cancer). I was diagnosed last September at age 38 with stage 3A, and it devastated me. But life goes on, and if life hands you lemons, make lemonade! Which is exactly what you have done. Your blog, and your attitude, are an inspiration to us all. Great job, and thanks!

Aunt Nini - 9/16/2010
Hang in there my little "Warrior Princess". I think of you daily and hoping you have peaceful and healing thoughts. Love you.

Stacey - 9/16/2010
Hello Darcel,
I am reading your blog for the first time, but I am all to familiar with your fight with this disease. I am two years out from diagnosis and doing well. Keep your wonderful attitude and know that your "sisters" in this fight are pulling for you! Take care and keep fighting.........Stacey

Ashley H - 9/14/2010
You are an inspiration! I'm married to Hinton and have heard of your journey through Clara. Hope all goes well for you this week. I will say a special prayer for you.

Cousin Melinda - 9/14/2010
Dear Darcel,
You've never met me, but your husband, Mike, is my cousin, once removed. Your husband's Dad and his sister, Nancy Beirne, are my first cousins. My Uncle Ed and Aunt Nan were your husband's grandparents.
I fight fiercely for my family and you are a part of my family. You are a very brave and strong woman -- I have immense respect for you. Ever since Nancy told me about your battle with ovarian cancer (and sent me the link to your website), I have been following your blog and thinking about you. If you ever need me for anything, I am here.
With love,
Aunt Melinda

Bootyjig5 - 9/13/2010
Hi Darcel...just wondering if you made it to the walk yesterday. My silly sisters, my best friend of 27 years, my youngest baby girl and myself all walked the 5 miles. We were the Dod Squad. And even tho my legs were yelling "WHAT THE HELL??" when I woke up this morning, every step was worth it. it was a wonderful day and it kinda planted a seed in my brain that I would maybe...JUST MAYBE...try to get a fundraiser going for around the Johnstown area... maybe. I would love to hold a dance.
Well have a great day. By the way, nice haircuts. When my sister lost all her hair I painted a huge Steeler Logo on her head...it was pretty awesome!!!

Kimberly - 9/10/2010
Saw your article in the paper and logged in today. I read your blog and wanted to share that I have said something very similar to you.... I was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago. Although it was a terrible situation, I felt very happy and peaceful. It was an experience that made very positive changes in my life. Also, I am a true believer that your attitude can dramatically alter your healing. God bless you.

Brian & Yvonne - 9/9/2010

Hey Darc,
I know this sounds corny, but you look so beautiful in the newest pic. Your eyes are alive and sparkling and even if you were bald...you would still be beautiful. You always were smart and bubbly, but you seem to have a calm fierceness about you. I love it! Keep up the good work. You are amazing.

Shannon - 8/31/2010
Hey Buddy, Just wanted to say Hi. We miss you at work. Yes, I am writing this while I am at work and you know what I would say to them if they yelled:) I am SOOOOOOO proud of you. You are an amazing inspiration to every human being; cancer or no cancer. Hunter has been talking about you a lot. Think I will bring him down soon one day to see you. He wore his bracelet to daycare one day and he told his friends that his bracelet was for Darcel and it means that she is sick and he hopes that she gets better. Aunt Trish's quotes are really good. Keep your head high and know that your team here are all rooting for you. FIGHT LIKE A GIRL!!!!! See you soon and even if you lose your hair, I will still LOVE you. Love ya and take care--see you soon.

Aunt Nini - 8/27/2010

Scrabble Slam is awesome. My family plays that at Christmas.

Ann Marie Gavell - 8/23/2010
Hi Darcel! I just wanted to give you a few words of support. My mom was diagnosed with stage IIIB granulosa cell ovarian cancer in 1988. She had to have a full hysterectomy and chemo, but she was fine. For 10 years. In 1998, the cancer returned, this time with fistulas that required her to eventually have a colostomy and a urostomy. It was a terrible time for my family, yet through it all, none of us ever gave up hope. Never. I always knew my mother would get better and so did she. As I have read so many others here say, a positive attitude really does make a difference. She recovered and was back to her old self within months of MAJOR reconstructive surgery. It is wonderful that you have such a great husband who has stood by you through this and such loving and supporting family and friends. My dad was a rock for my mom when she really needed it. Please stay strong and have faith. If you ever get bored or need someone to talk with or just complain to, please feel free to e-mail me: capecodann@aol.com.

Lynn - 8/23/2010
Darcel,
I have a google search running on ovarian cancer and came across your story and this page that way.
I am 46 and was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer in early December. My ca125 was 1490! I've been getting chemo since the beginning of January. The ca125 has plateaued in the 77-88 range, but my oncologist continues to see progress visually in my CT scans so I'm still getting small doses of just one drug, taxol, every week.
My attitude is similar to yours. I expect to beat this and I am willing to do anything in my power to make it so.
For me, the chemo hasn't been that bad at all. Compared to recovering from the surgery, it was a breeze. Some of the side effects were worse at the beginning and have gotten better. I also learned how to deal with the post chemo things like changes in taste. (I drank San Pellegrino lemon or orange when water tasted terrible. I also found those things that tasted okay to me like Wheat Thins and rice pudding.)
Sending good wishes your way!

Hi, Darcel. Just thinking about you and wanted to check in. One thing that I visualize while in chemo is that the drugs are sanitizing my body, cleansing it of the dangerous and damaged cells. I think of it as a purification process and meditate about the renewal my body is going through. I am so proud of you for your spirit of survival.
love, Annette

Roxie Merino - 8/23/2010
Darcel,
I am on Ov Ca survivor originally from Hooversville now retired in Florida. I was diagnosed 8/06 with stage 1C clear cell and had 6 cycles of taxol/carboplatin. I have been in remission since then. Hang in...you will beat this. I send all good healing thoughts and prayers your way. God Bless all you are doing. We Western Pa. girls are tough!!

David Wallis - 8/20/2010
Hi Darcel, I hope your having a good day! You probably never knew this, but about 4 years ago, I was diagnosed with non-seminoma germ cell carcinoma, which basically means I had testicular cancer in my chest. The doctors told me that only 2 percent of all testicular cancer were germ cell tumors and of that 2 percent, only 1.5 percent were the non-seminoma. Despite those odds, I always had a positive attitude and never gave up. I was on chemotherapy from Labor Day 2006 to the middle of November 2006. The tumor was so big the chemo wasn't working as well as they had hoped. So, they took me off chemo and decided I would need surgery to cut the tumor out of my chest. I had the surgery at Magee Womens Hospital 2 days after Christmas 2006, and everything was a success. The tumor was the size of a football when it was all pieced together in pathology. The people at Magee Womens Hospital are wonderful! I know this is going to be an extremely tough fight for you, but I also know since I have been there that you can do it. You will have many good days and many bad days, but don't let the bad days get you down. Keep that positive attitude no matter what happens or what they tell you. If you believe, everything is possible. I will be praying for you and your family. I have been cancer-free for almost 4 years now. Someday, you will be able to say the same. BTW - Joey is doing wonderful now. He's still not talking a whole lot, but he'll start the 5th grade on Wednesday. If a non-verbal autistic child can make it through the things he has had to deal with in his life, then I know you will be able to make it through this as well.

Debbie Stevens - 8/20/2010
G'day Darcel...Well, what to say to someone as amazing as yourself?? I have read your story, and just want you to know that I may be many miles away, but you have my utmost respect and support! God bless you, and keep on with that truly courageous fighting spirit, your testimony will indeed do wonders for so many others in similar circumstance.

Aunt Nini - 8/19/2010
Hope you are resting well this evening. Just wanted you to know I was thinking about you this evening and reading some of the beautiful, courageous words from some people that are fighting the same battle you are. You all are amazing women and I think you and Mike are doing a wonderful job of spreading the news to get some early detection.

Jess - 8/19/2010
Hi Darc,
Today was an awesome day. I hope there was a lot of money raised for your medical needs and OCR. You are truly a wonderful and encouraging woman. I am so glad that I know you. Anyone that hits this site will now how you are a fighter and an AMAZING person. Keep strong we think and pray for you all of the time. I say a prayer every night for you and all people with cancer. My father was diagnosed with leukemia about 4 months ago. FIGHT ON!!!

Rocky Rees - 8/19/2010
Darcel, heard about your challenge and had to drop you a line of support. I am confident that you are the one that will win this. Attitude, confidence and will power will see you through. After all you are a Red Raider. I will pray God eases your burden and allows us all to enjoy you for many years.
Coach

Hi DARCEL!!!
Just wanted you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
You are not alone in the fight against Ovarian Cancer.
August 13 of last year I began my battle. The tumor was
removed, port inserted and chemo started in September.
It was scary. I had tons of love and support from family
and friends. My family has been awesome....they are constantly encouraging me and showering me with never ending love. Chemo was a scary experience...but, we made it through. When my hair began to fall out, both my
husband and I shaved our heads(now that was support).
The wig thing didn't really work for me....strangers
would pretend they didn't see me and friends/family
treated me no differently without hair. The head just
gets a little cold at times. The hair has come back thicker,
softer and CURLY !!!
Please know that God is watching over you and in the months
to come you will cross paths with many angels. Stay
positive, fight hard !! God Bless

Elisabeth - 8/19/2010
Hi Darcel,
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this fight. I too, have ovarian cancer, Stage 3C and it was a complete shock. I had a complete hysterectomy along with major bowel resecturing and also had two ports, IV and IP. I went through 6 months of Taxol and Carboplatin chemo infusions every 3.5 weeks in the hospital with lots of hydrations. I am here today to let you know ...YOU CAN DO IT!!!! You will meet 'angels' along the way that will help you along. Help will find you from all aspects of your life and you must believe that. My Ca-125 count was a whopping 4170 and I finally got it down to 35 after chemo was finished. To date, I have had two PET/CT scans, three CT's scans, and 2 chest X-rays that show NED (no evidence of disease). I lost all my hair but it has come back and in thicker than before. I suggest once it starts coming out to just go ahead and take the rest off with it. Down the road, your hair will not mean as much to you as you thought and you might even like it better when it comes back in. Although all my scans are clear, my CA-125 keeps climbing back up, almost doubling every blood check. I am now on my second regimen of chemo; this time gemzar, carboplatin, and avastin. I am in the early stages right now with it but am VERY HOPEFUL. Attitude is everything and you CAN and WILL BEAT THIS. Thanks for fighting the fight along with me. WE CAN BEAT THIS! Best of luck and love....

Mike L - 8/19/2010
Go get 'em Darcy. Good luck to you and Mike.

Dave B. - 8/19/2010
I say a Special Thanks to the Lord Above and Prayers that make YOU STRONG.The LORD IS WITH YOU. I will keep you in my PRAYERS. Love in CHRIST. Dave B.

Darc, your new do looks great! You truely are an inspiration to everyone for what you're doing and how you're doing it. Most people would pull a complete pity-party. But you're facing this whole situation with a positive attitude, the strength of an army, and the courage like no other. Just remember that the more difficulties one has to encounter, on the inside and out, the more significant and the higher in inspiration their life will be. You're a beautiful woman, with or without hair. And for all those who people who may just want to show pity because you're 'a bald beauty' just remember there's an army of people behind you that are ready to kick an ass or two when needed. Stay strong and stay positive and remember we all love you and pray for you everyday! Love Mel

Ceara - 8/12/2010
You are an inspiration to so many people Darc. I hope that you know that. You have taken a bad situation and instead of "woah-is-me'ing" you have turned it into a positive situation that can benefit THOUSANDS of people. You are beautiful, smart, wise and gracious. You are also strong and empowering. You will get through this with flying colors and be a even better and stronger woman because of it. I am so proud of you. You have SO many people who love and support you. You're going to do great. <3 you.

Dan - 8/12/2010
I was telling Mike that after a few chemo appointments, you guys will find your routine and you will get through it in no time. :) You'll be great.
